This blog covers the 1989 baseball season in the Bay Area, from the Giants to the A’s to the Loma Prieta earthquake that interrupted the Bay Bridge World Series. It focuses on the A’s, and is essentially a scrapbook of pictures and text from 1989, with links to some audio as well.
There’s some things on the Giants, and I’m also putting up some pictures from the Loma Prieta earthquake-after all, who can remember that season without thinking of the quake?-and some A’s/Giants memorabilia from 1989. Write to me if you have any pictures, audio clips, or video clips of your own that you’d like to share, or have me mention in the audio/video guide on the blog. Meanwhile, if you’re more interested in the earthquake than the A’s and Giants, you might want to visit my blog collecting Loma Prieta stories.
I just returned from a visit to Cooperstown and while at dinner had the occasion to meet Terry Christman, who was wearing a WS ring. He told me that he was a member of the A’s 1989 coaching staff. I have been unable to confirm that on the internet. Can you confirm that he was a coach?
Thank you.
I can’t really confirm it, but he was a batting practice pitcher, minor league pitching coach, and pitching chart coordinator for the Giants and A’s for many years, so I don’t have any reason to doubt that he got the ring for his time with the A’s in 1989. I don’t know any other team with whom he would have gotten the ring.
Hi
I am looking for a hardcopy or color image of the front page of the oct 29 1989 san francisco chronicle about the oakland a’s world series wins. any ideas where i could find it?
I was working in the City for the son of Chub Feeney, former GM of the Giants. He got tickets to all of the Series games and had a raffle in the office and I won a ticket to the second game in Oakland. Being the only A’s fan in the office, I wanted to watch the game in Oakland. A co-worker asked me to trade my ticket for the 3rd game of the Series at Candlestick. He begged, he pleaded and he attempted to bribe me-lunch, big deal. I said no and have been forever more grateful that I did. Had a great time wearing my A’s logo gear while surrounded by my co-workers in their orange and black and our guys beat the crap out of the giants. A very good day!!
