Rene, a Los Angeles native, was a part-time catcher for the Kansas City and Oakland A’s before embarking on a long-term coaching career. Like Dave Henderson, he was on the Red Sox 1986 team before moving to Oakland, where he was the A’s third-base coach. He’s still coaching, for the Colorado Rockies’ AAA team. An article quoted him about playing with Satchel Paige in 1965 with the Kansas City Athletics: “He threw batting practice. He still was very flexible. He threw the hesitation pitch, and I was fortunate to hit one out. I said, ‘Throw it again.’ And he hesitated and threw a fastball and shattered my bat.”
